Surat : As India prepares to host the 2036 Olympics, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in Surat has taken a significant step to boost the country’s Olympic aspirations. The university’s Board of Management has approved a plan to construct a state-of-the-art gymnasium, specifically designed to train students in powerlifting and weightlifting. With a budget allocation of Rs 20 crore, this initiative aims to prepare young athletes for the global stage.

The move comes in response to India’s underwhelming performance at the Paris Olympics, where the country’s medal tally fell short of expectations. With the 2036 Olympics on the horizon, various states in India are gearing up to enhance their sports infrastructure to prepare the next generation of athletes. Gujarat, in particular, has been active in building new stadiums and sports facilities. VNSGU’s decision to focus on weightlifting and powerlifting is a part of this broader national effort to strengthen India’s sporting capabilities.

VNSGU Vice-Chancellor Kishoresinh Chavda emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “For the upcoming 2036 Olympics, we have taken a decision to build an Olympic-level gym specializing in weightlifting. Our aim is to create a facility that can train athletes to compete at the highest levels. We have already begun preparations to ensure the gym meets Olympic standards.”

The establishment of the gym follows an online meeting chaired by Gujarat’s Chancellor, Acharya Devvrat, who encouraged universities across the state to focus on a specific sport to help groom champions. During this meeting, the vice-chancellors of various universities discussed which sports their institutions would prioritize. VNSGU chose weightlifting, believing that this sport aligns with the university’s strengths and offers a promising path to Olympic success.

The gym will not only be a facility for VNSGU students but will also be open to citizens across India. According to Chavda, while university students will have access to the gym at a concessional rate, non-students will also be able to use the facility by paying a fee determined by the management team. The university plans to bring in national-level trainers to guide athletes, ensuring that they receive world-class instruction.

“We are consulting with various technicians and experts to ensure that the gym is equipped with the latest technology and meets international standards,” added Chavda. “After thorough deliberations, the estimated cost of constructing this Olympic-level facility is around Rs 20 crore.”

This initiative is part of a larger trend across India, where institutions are beginning to focus on sports infrastructure to foster young talent. With the 2036 Olympics in sight, universities and sports academies are playing a crucial role in preparing the athletes who will represent India on the world stage.

The VNSGU gym is expected to become a hub for weightlifting enthusiasts, offering students and aspiring athletes an opportunity to train with top-tier equipment and under the guidance of experienced coaches. This step is seen as a major milestone in VNSGU’s efforts to contribute to India’s Olympic future and foster a new generation of athletes who could potentially bring home gold medals.
