Gandhinagar : Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently engaged in a crucial telephonic conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, addressing the urgent situation brought about by heavy rains and subsequent flooding across various regions of the state. The affected areas notably include Saurashtra, Kutch, and Vadodara.

PM Modi assured Patel of comprehensive central assistance to aid Gujarat in managing the flood aftermath. He also sought detailed updates on the ongoing relief operations to ensure swift and effective measures are in place.

The gravity of the situation is underscored by the status of Gujarat’s reservoirs, with 59 out of 206 reservoirs already at full capacity. An additional 72 reservoirs are on high alert, and 22 more are on alert status. Moreover, nine reservoirs are under flood warning, while seven rivers have already exceeded their banks due to the heavy rains.

Of particular concern is the Sardar Sarovar Dam, currently holding 88.74% of its total storage capacity, equivalent to 2,96,459 MCFT of water. This highlights the critical need for coordinated efforts to manage water levels and prevent further escalation of the flooding.

Chief Minister Patel has been proactive in directing state officials and system operators to prioritize the restoration of essential services, even if it means temporarily impacting power supply, road access, or the distribution of crucial supplies. Over 5961 damaged power poles have already been repaired, contributing significantly to restoring power in previously affected areas.

In response to the escalating crisis, Patel convened a comprehensive review meeting with district collectors and municipal commissioners from the worst-hit areas such as Navsari, Valsad, Dang, Panchmahal, Vadodara, and Chhotaudepur. Discussions during the meeting centered on assessing river water levels, coordinating traffic management, and overseeing the safe relocation of residents from low-lying areas.

Moving forward, Patel has instructed district in-charge secretaries to promptly mobilize resources and provide guidance to local administrations, emphasizing the urgency of preparedness and response measures amid ongoing heavy rainfall.

The collaborative efforts between the central government under PM Modi’s leadership and the state authorities in Gujarat reflect a concerted commitment to mitigating the impact of the floods and ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities across the state.
