Fungus Found in Bhakharvadi from Shri Jagdish Farshan in Vadodara

VADODARA : Next time you gorge on the famous ‘bhakharvadi’ from Shri Jagdish Farshan in Vadodara then think twice. You might land up eating bhakharvadi infested with fungus.

A customer discovered fungus in a packet of bhakharvadi purchased from the Shri Jagdish Farshan store at the Vadodara ST depot, raising serious concerns about food safety on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the customer opened the neatly packaged bhakharvadis of Jagdish Farshan only to find them infested with fungus. The incident has cast a shadow on the reputation of Shri Jagdish Farshan, a well-known name in Gujarat’s farshan industry. The company, famous for its soft and spicy bhakharvadis, has a large customer base both in Gujarat and abroad.

Questions have been raised on the food safety department of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) after a series of incidents occurred in the last couple of months where moths, lizard and now fungus was found in the food items sold by the reputed brands in Vadodara.

Jagdish Farshan is a reputed name in the farshan industry in Gujarat. Based in Vadodara, Jagdish Farshan is famous for its soft and spicy bhakharvadis in Gujarat and abroad. The bhakharvadis are prepared using  Bengal Gram , Dry Coconut, Refined Palmolien Oil, Groundnut Oil, Sugar, Sesame Seeds, Fennel Seeds, Iodized salt, Red Chilly Powder,Garam Masala, Ginger, Garlic, Green Chilly.

Earlier, fungi and bacteria were found in mineral water bottles in Palanpur, Banaskantha. Mineral water in Shagun Beverages was found to contain fungi and bacteria. The food department seized the item in question.

A quantity of mineral water worth 1.13 lakhs was seized and samples were sent to the lab. Two months ago, the food department seized 5664 bottles of mineral water. Mineral water was supplied in one liter bottles.

There is an illegal mineral water plant on Palanpur Abu Highway. On the other hand, the health department had earlier seized 5,200 kg of pressed gram, plain gram and mung from a unit named Asha Food at Rajkot. Samples of burnt oil, spices and other items were also sent for testing.
