Highway to Hell: Commuters in Vadodara Face Hours-Long Traffic Snarl on NH48

Vadodara: What should have been a smooth commute on National Highway-48 (NH48)  turned into a nightmarish ordeal for scores of motorists and transporters on Wednesday morning, thanks to a massive traffic jam stretching for kilometers on the Jambuva bypass bridge. The entire bridge towards Jambuva was choked with vehicles, leaving commuters scrambling for space and waiting for hours to get through.

The root of the chaos? The highly damaged roads on NH48, particularly around the Jambuva crossing. Heavy vehicles frequently got stuck in the craters, causing a domino effect that brought traffic to a standstill during peak hours.

“It was like being trapped in a parking lot,” said frustrated commuter Rahul Patel. “I’ve been stuck here for over two hours, and there’s no end in sight. I have an important meeting to attend, but with this traffic, I’ll be lucky to make it there by lunchtime.”

Local residents, who have long been plagued by the NH-48 bottleneck, expressed their outrage at the National Highway Authority of India’s (NHAI) inaction. “This is not the first time we’ve faced such a situation,” said resident Sunita Sharma. “We’ve repeatedly raised our concerns with the NHAI, but they seem to turn a deaf ear. They need to take immediate action and repair this highway before someone gets seriously hurt.”

The 3km-long jam stretched from the Jambuva Bridge towards the Tarsali Bridge, impacting commuters traveling not only within Vadodara but also those heading to Ahmedabad, Surat, and Mumbai. The single lane choked with slow-moving vehicles and frustrated honking created a cacophony of chaos.

“We’re suffering because of the NHAI’s negligence,” said truck driver Ashok Kumar. “We’re stuck here for hours, wasting valuable time and fuel. The narrow bridge, the potholes, and the frequent accidents – it’s all a recipe for disaster.”

Residents have demanded a multi-pronged solution to the NH-48 woes. They’ve called for the widening of the narrow bridge, the urgent repair of the damaged sections, and the speedy opening of the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway to divert traffic away from the overburdened NH-48.
