Gandhinagar Host IIT Sports Meet 

The nine-day sports meet is being jointly organized by IITGN and IIT Mumbai. IITGN is also hosting 28th Inter IIT Staff meet. This six-day meet beginning from December 24 is expected to see participation of over 1,500 staff members.

Gandhinagar : More than 1,500 students from 23 IITs across the country will take part in the 56th Inter-IIT Sports Meet for students to be held at IIG Gandhinagar from December 14.

The nine-day sports meet is being jointly organized by IITGN and IIT Mumbai. IITGN is also hosting 28th Inter IIT Staff meet. This six-day meet beginning from December 24 is expected to see participation of over 1,500 staff members.

The sports meets will be held at the IITGN’s state-of-the-art sports complex. The complex has various indoor facilities including an athletic track, badminton court, squash court, table tennis court, volleyball court, basketball court, climbing wall, football ground, cricket ground.  an Olympic size swimming pool and yoga hall among other facilities. A new lawn tennis court has been laid keeping in mind the 2023 sports meets.

The meet for students will have competition in running, hammer throw, javelin throw, shot put, long jump, cricket, football, squash, chess and tennis. In the staff meet, the athletes will compete in track and field events, tennis, volleyball, football, cricket, squash, basketball, volleyball and badminton.

In his message, Professor Rajat Moona, director IITGN and chairman of the Inter-IIT Sports Board, said that it has been proved time and again that sports is not just an extra-curricular activity, but one of invaluable lessons for life.  It teaches us the importance of practice, persistence and building mental and physical strength and encourages us to give our best, strive for teamwork, celebrate victories, deal with failures, rebuild confidence and come back stronger, he added.

The program’s mascot “Neelswara”, a nilgai, often seen in Gandhinagar, was unveiled at IITGN in August 2023.
