Surat : The nagarpalikas and Surat district panchayat authorities in the Surat district continue to remain inactive in tackling the alarming proliferation of Conocarpus trees despite directives from the State Government to cease their plantation due to their detrimental effects on the environment and human health. This stagnation in action has raised significant concerns among environmental activists and citizens, contrasting the proactive steps taken by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) through its ‘Mission Conocarpus.’

Conocarpus trees have drawn attention due to their adverse impact on the ecosystem and public health, prompting the State Government to issue directives to all municipalities and district administrations to halt the planting of these trees. However, the lethargic response from the nagarpalikas and Surat district panchayat authorities has intensified worries about the widespread growth of this problematic species.

Darshan Naik, a respected social activist and farmer leader in Surat, has addressed a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, highlighting the inactivity of the district authorities, particularly the nagarpalikas, in combatting the escalating threat posed by Conocarpus trees. Naik’s urgent plea emphasizes the immediate formation of a team comprising responsible officers to conduct surveys and eliminate the hazardous Conocarpus species from every taluka and village in the Surat district.

Health Hazards of Conocarpus Trees:

Conocarpus trees pose several significant health hazards to both the environment and the public:

Respiratory Issues and Allergies: The Conocarpus trees release excessive pollen, leading to respiratory problems and allergies among individuals. This can exacerbate asthma and trigger allergic reactions in susceptible populations, causing discomfort and health complications.

Soil and Water Depletion: Conocarpus trees significantly impact soil and water resources by depleting water tables and increasing soil salinity. This affects agricultural productivity and the growth of other vegetation in the surrounding areas.

Displacement of Native Flora and Fauna: The invasive nature of Conocarpus trees disrupts the balance of the ecosystem, displacing native flora and fauna. This can lead to a decline in biodiversity, impacting the local environment’s natural equilibrium.

Potential Skin Irritation: Contact with Conocarpus leaves and bark might cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals, adding to the list of health concerns associated with this species.

Naik stressed the urgency of halting the cultivation and immediate removal of surviving Conocarpus trees. Additionally, he advocated for punitive action against negligent officials who have failed to address the menace posed by Conocarpus trees.

As the threat of Conocarpus trees continues to loom over the Surat district, the call for immediate action and the necessity to eliminate this detrimental species remains crucial to ensure a healthier environment and safeguard public health. The urgency of eradicating Conocarpus trees persists as a key priority in establishing a sustainable and ecologically balanced habitat in the region.
