Surat : A hazardous incident unfolded at a scrap godown in Surat’s Pandesara area when five workers fell unconscious due to toxic gas exposure on Wednesday. The incident occurred in Ganeshnagar, Pandesara, as one of the workers attempted to open a bottle among the scrap materials in the godown. All five affected workers were swiftly transported to the New Civil Hospital in a 108 EMRI ambulance.

The Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) fire and emergency department responded promptly to the distress call from Pandesara. According to fire officials, the bottle contained chlorine gas, and the release of toxic fumes significantly impacted the workers’ health, causing them to struggle to breathe. Immediate medical attention was essential, and the workers were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Harish Chandra, an eyewitness to the incident, recounted that the alarming event took place at approximately 2:10 PM. A bottle was retrieved from the scrap materials, and as it was being opened, gas began leaking from it, quickly filling the room. The toxic gas exposure led to all five individuals losing consciousness.

Fire officer Hitesh Patil provided further details, explaining that the incident unfolded in Gopalnagar, near Vadodgam Tirupati Circle. A distress call alerted authorities that five people were suffocating due to a gas leak. The fire department responded swiftly to the scene. However, before their arrival, locals had already rushed the victims to the government hospital using a 108 ambulance. A fire team was subsequently dispatched to the civil hospital. It was determined that the workers had suffocated due to gas leakage from the bottles found amid the scrap materials.

Among the affected individuals, Gore Lal, Umashankar, Krishnakanth, and two others are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital. Their conditions are being closely monitored as medical professionals work to address the effects of the toxic gas exposure.
