Surat (Gujarat) [India], October 25 : The labor has slapped notices to about three diamond companies in the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing center in Surat for denying benefits of the Diwali bonus and other perks to the diamond workers under the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965.
Official sources said the Labour department slapped notices to the diamond companies located in Varachha and Katargam—Aaham Gems, Dharti Diamond, and Maruti diamond—on Saturday. The diamond companies denied benefits to the workers under the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965.
The Diamond Workers’ Union Gujarat (DWUG) had submitted a representation to the district collector’s office with the list of about 50 diamond companies for not providing Diwali bonuses, overtime, and other benefits under the Labour Laws.
Following the representation, the collector’s office swung into action and ordered the labor department to take appropriate action against those violating the Labour Laws.
Bhavesh Tank, vice-president, DWUG told TBT, “Come Diwali festival, and the diamond companies exploit their workers. The workers are not paid with the Diwali bonus and the overtime wages. We submitted a list of such 50 diamond companies violating the Labour Laws”
Tank added, “The Labour department swung into action following our representation to the district collector’s office. Earlier, the Surat Diamond Association (SDA) had conducted a meeting with the diamond factory owners and urged them to make the timely payment of Diwali bonuses and overtime wages”
