Surat: Surat’s Donate Life, an NGO working for organ donation awareness in Surat and South Gujarat region, has launched a unique initiative in the country where the family members of the organ donor were given away with the ‘My Stamp’—a personalized sheet of Postage Stamp of India Post—with donor’s photo on October 6.
Ranjan Pravin Chavda, 40, a yoga teacher, residing in Valsad met with an accident on September 30. After primary treatment in the hospital in Valsad, Ranjan was shifted to Surat’s Apple hospital, where she was declared brain dead by the doctors on October 2.
Ranjan’s family members including her husband were convinced by the founder president of Donate Life NGO, Nilesh Mandlewala for the cadaver donation to save the lives of the patients suffering from organ failure. The family of Ranjan Chavda agreed to the organ donation.
For the first time in Surat’s history, the liver of Ranjan Chavda was transplanted in Govind Dholakia, founder, and chairman of the Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK) at Kiran Hospital. This was the first liver transplant surgery performed at Surat’s Kiran Hospital by Dr. Ravi Mohanka, one of the most well-renowned liver transplant surgeons in India with an experience of over 2,000 transplants in 15 years.
According to Donate Life, team members went to the prayer meeting organized by Ranjanben’s family in Valsad on October 6. The family members were given away with the personalized sheet of Postage Stamps of India Post with the photo of Ranjan Chavda to pay tribute to the departed soul.
Nilesh Mandlewala, founder president of Donate Life told TBT, “This is the first time in the country that we have started an initiative to pay tribute and homage to the organ donors with the post department’s ‘My Stamp’. We have tied up with the Post Department for this initiative. IT takes a lot of courage for the family members to donate the organs of their loved ones”
