High-level inquiry sought in the alleged custodial death of a Muslim youth in Chowk Bazaar police station.

Surat: A high-level inquiry has been sought in the alleged custodial death of a Muslim youth, who was declared dead by the doctors at the Lokhat General hospital on Tuesday.

Former Congress councilor from Limbayat ward, Aslam Cyclewala has written a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Ajay Tomar, demanding a high-level inquiry by the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) rank IPS officer into the alleged custodial death of Muslim youth.

Irshad Shaikh, a resident of Chowk Bazaar was picked up by the Chowk Bazaar police in connection with some petty crime on August 3. The youth was taken to the police station in an autorickshaw by few plain-clothed policemen.

On the morning of August 4, the youth was brought to the Lokhat General Hospital with injury marks on his body. However, the doctors at the hospital declared him dead on admission.

In his letter, a former Congress councilor has leveled an allegation against the Chowk Bazaar police for their alleged high-degree torture on the ill-fated youth, causing his death.

Talking with TBT, Aslam Cyclewala said, “The youth was under police custody since August 3. He was brought to the hospital in an autorickshaw by the policemen. It is a clear case of custodial death, but the police are trying to cover up the facts. I have demanded a high-level inquiry into the case by a DCP-rank police officer”
