Surat: Any wild guesses on the monthly spend of electricity bill of the official bungalow allotted to the Mayor by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC)? It is Rs 51,890.
At a time when the urban planners and the elected representatives of the SMC have been running campaigns to spread awareness among the denizens to opt for rooftop solar panels to reduce the electricity consumption, Surat’s Mayor is consuming electricity worth Rs 51,890 per month.
The SMC has constructed a lavish bungalow for the Mayor on 5,983 square meters of land on Udhana-Magdalla road. Mayor, Hemali Boghawala, shifted to the official Mayor’s bungalow in May-2021.
Mayor Hemali Boghawala was in controversy for various reasons during the pandemic period. After she was appointed Mayor of Surat during the coronavirus pandemic, she was in the news for taking out a huge rally in the electoral ward in Adajan and that she was greeting people without wearing the face mask and maintaining social distance.
She (Boghawala) was under the line of fire from the BJP high command after her video went viral for misbehaving with the family traveling in the car for not wearing facemasks.
IT is the Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL), which is supplying electricity on the Udhana-Magdalla road. The state-run discom slapped Rs 51,890 worth of electricity bill to the SMC’s Athwa zone office for the Mayor’s bungalow for the period of May-June-2021.
Sources said the other utility bills including that of the PNG, water charges, etc. are pending.
