Surat. The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) has urged Chief Minister Vijay Rupani for making serious efforts in developing Surat as the Information Technology (IT) hub.
A delegation led by SGCCI president Dinesh Navadia met Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar on Wednesday along with Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Kishore Kanani, to apprise him about the IT potential in the city of diamonds and textiles.
Surat is the economic capital of Gujarat. With two of its vibrant industries—diamond and textiles—there is a huge potential for Information Technology to emerge as the third biggest industry in Gujarat.
There is enough manpower in Surat and that the big companies working in software and outsourcing have also descended in Surat sensing the huge potential. In the last five years scores of IT Start-up firms have come up in the city for web designing, applications and software related field.
Navadia told TBT, “In the next one decade, Surat is going to become the IT hub of Gujarat. All the software related to diamond and textile industries are made in Surat. There are about 1,600 software companies based in Surat, through which more than 10,000 people are getting employment”
Navadiya added, “Google is paying about Rs 100 crore every month through advertising by mobile applications, games and YouTube”
All kinds of software used in the E-Commerce, Diamond, Textile, Accounting, H.R. Software used in the fields of management, insurance, CRM, banking, cyber security, hotel management etc. are made by local software companies. IT related to automation, A.I. and software related to machine learning has also been developed in Surat.
Moreover, Surat’s IT companies are employing about 35% of the women workforce and that about 500 E-commerce sites are developed for the selling the products developed by women in the city.
In the coming years, if IT hub is developed in Surat, the local people will get adequate remuneration. Professionals would not require to shift their base to the cities like Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai. Therefore, the Government of Gujarat, together with the Central Government must seriously think of setting up an IT hub in Surat.
Official sources said that Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has extended all possible support for the development of the IT hub in Surat.
