Surat : There is good news for the nature lovers, environmentalists and general public at large. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has clarified that they don’t have any plans to construct administrative building for SMC headquarter at Jawaharlal Nehru Garden a.k.a Chowpaty garden in Athwalines.
Following the uproar and resentment among the environment activists and denizens over the proposed plan of SMC to construct its headquarter at Chowpaty garden last year, the Surat Citizen Council Trust (SCCT) had submitted a memorandum to the civic chief and Chief Minister Vijay Rupani to scrap the proposal and save the garden.
The lush green Chowpaty garden is the only green space in Athwalines and that the environmentalists feared the construction of proposed 25-storyed headquarter having the height of 105 meter will destroy the green cover in the middle of the city.
Last year in December, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani during his visit in the city had stated that the SMC will become the first municipal corporation in the country to have its own iconic headquarter in the middle of the city. Apart from the iconic headquarter, the state government has approved the construction of the Tapi river front on the lines of Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati river front.
Sharad Kapadia, president of SCCT told TBT, “We have received a letter from SMC’s civil department stating they have no plans to construct SMC headquarter at Chowpaty. The letter is self-explanatory and ends the issue of losing the lush green Chowkpaty garden”
